Berlin Street Art

Art is everywhere is Berlin - pretty much any blank wall of a building or hidden allyway has some form of graffiti, stencil, poster or paintwork. The Berlin districts of Kreuzberg-Friedrichshain and Mitte have some of the most impressive pieces, and they can be easily found on a self guided walk. Even during a thunderstorm.

Mitte - Rosenthaler Straße

An ally way off Rosenthaler Straße is lined with amazing pieces. The nearest S-Bahn is Hackescher Markt and the entrance is by the side of a cinema cafe. A huge array of art can be found here, from stencils and posters, to interesting metal work sculptures. A lot of famous artists have featured here and from what I can tell, art work changes and updated constantly. The ally way is lined with bikes and has a few interesting cafes, bars and bookshops. Especially handy for a coffee stop and shelter from the freezing Berlin summer rain.

Kreuzberg-Friedrichshain

There are many alternative walking tour groups that you can join up with that will take you to the art, however we went on a self guided tour based loosely around a walking tour we found on everytrail.com

S-Bahn Görlitzer Bahnhof is a good starting point for the big wall art in Kreuzberg. Straight out of the station is the first piece on a blank wall. I couldn'd find a title on the internet for this piece, so i'll just call it the hanging animals for now.

We headed towards the river and Schlesische Tor for a number of the giant pieces such as Brothers, Leviathan and Yellow Man.

There are plenty more in this area, but our walk was cut short by a severe thunderstorm. So we headed back towards the S-Bahn to find one of the more popular and famous pieces, the Astronaut before heading back to the hostel.

The street art tour is an amazing experience, I found it far more interesting than going to a traditional gallery in some respects. You have to search for the art. You never know what might be on the building just around the corner, it's dynamic; with so many styles and media utilised. Best of all its free for everyone to enjoy.
